Using traditional materials or a Sketch app on my iPad, I regularly draw at music or dance events. These drawings and animations not only visually express the music, they also reveal the creative thinking trail and inform my process.

The Session Bar
An exploration into drawing. Responding to music and movement while drawing on the iPad. These drawings were done while walking through a crowded pavilion at the National Folk Festival in Canberra, Australia. Groups of novice and professional musicians gather and improvise with others in clusters. Everyone is welcome and included. The music and sound overlap as you walk from one end to the other. These simple sketches reflect some of the joyous mesh of concentration and creativity that is the ‘Session Bar’. Copyright Janet Saunders, PhD candidate, Western Sydney University.

These accomplished jazz musicians improvisation style inspired the repetition and overlapping of colour and line. The backlit, cloistered environment of the space, and the intense concentration of the musicians is reflected in the focus of bright outline and the intimate rendering of Alister’s face while playing.
